How Standing in Dick’s Sporting Goods Got Me a “W” on SNKRS

How Standing in Dick’s Sporting Goods Made Me Win on SNKRS

There is an unwritten law in the sneaker community: when drop day arrives, you pick your strategy and you stick to it. You either commit to the digital bloodbath that is the SNKRS app, or you lace up, head out into the real world, and brave the brick-and-mortar storefronts.

On Saturday, September 19th, I chose chaos.

The Air Jordan 9 “Space Jam” Retro was releasing, and instead of doing the sensible thing—sitting in my pajamas staring at my phone as 9:00 AM approached—I decided to put on real pants and drive over to my local Dick’s Sporting Goods. I had visions of beating the system. While everyone else was getting stuck on the dreaded “Pending” screen at home, I’d be walking out the front door with a crisp box under my arm like a local legend.

I walked up to the entrance right around drop time, feeling like a genius, and approached the employee standing by the front door.

“Hey man,” I asked, trying to sound casual. “You guys got the Space Jam 9s in stock?”

He looked at me with the tired, compassionate eyes of a retail worker who has had to break the hearts of fifty sneakerheads already that morning.

“Yeah,” he said, “but if you didn’t reserve a pair for pickup, you’ll need to come back after 1:00 PM for the unclaimed pairs.”

1:00 PM. In sneaker time, four hours is an eternity. By 1:00 PM, those shoes would either be long gone or sitting in the trunk of someone else’s car.

I stood there in the middle of the entrance, right under the Dick’s Sporting Goods sign, contemplating my options. Then it hit me: the digital backup plan.

While literally standing inside a physical store that had the shoe in stock, I pulled out my phone, launched the SNKRS app, and entered the draw right then and there. I didn’t even step out of the doorway. I just stood next to the entrance employee like an extra in a commercial, tapping my screen with the desperate speed of a competitive gamer.

Select size. Confirm payment. Face ID. Submit.

A few moments later, the screen refreshed, and there it was in all its bright red glory:

GOT ‘EM.

I stood in the store lobby for a second just staring at my phone screen in disbelief. I looked up at the employee, looked down at my phone, and almost wanted to show him the screen like, “Hey, turn around, I got ’em online while standing next to you!”

Instead, I just smiled, politely thanked him for his time, and walked back out to my car as a proud new owner of the Space Jam 9s—courtesy of the app I left my house to avoid using.

Sneaker hunting in 2026 is wild, but a win is a win!
